Getting to Palestine

Most visitors arrive via Israel or Jordan. Learn about border crossings, airports, and practical tips for reaching Palestine’s main cities with ease.

Overview

Most international visitors enter Palestine through borders controlled by Israel. For that reason, it is important to understand your options before traveling. By planning ahead, you will save time and avoid unnecessary stress on arrival.

The most common entry points are Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv and the Allenby/King Hussein Bridge crossing from Jordan. Each has different procedures and travel times, but both provide access to Palestine’s main cities such as Bethlehem, Ramallah, and Jericho.

Main Entry Points

  • Ben Gurion Airport (Tel Aviv): The busiest and most common gateway. From here, visitors usually travel by shared taxi, bus, or private transfer toward Jerusalem and Bethlehem. Keep in mind, entry is controlled by Israeli authorities, and questions on arrival are common.
  • Allenby/King Hussein Bridge (Jordan): A convenient option for travelers coming through Amman. The crossing involves more security checks, and wait times can be long. However, it provides the most direct link to Jericho and central Palestine.
  • Other Crossings: Erez (into Gaza) is not open to tourists. Sheikh Hussein and Yitzhak Rabin crossings connect Jordan with Israel but are less practical for reaching Palestinian cities.

Transfers to Palestine

Shared Taxis (Service): Common between checkpoints and major cities. Affordable and reliable.

Private Taxis: Widely available, often the quickest option if you have luggage.

Buses: Connect some border points with larger cities, though less frequent.

Tour Operators: Many visitors book transfers in advance as part of a guided tour, which makes the process easier.

Always carry your passport when crossing borders and while traveling within Palestine.

Allow extra time for security checks and possible delays.

If flying into Ben Gurion, be prepared for detailed questions about your trip.

At Allenby Bridge, it is best to arrive early in the day to avoid long waits.
