Tower of David – Jerusalem’s Citadel & Museum

Historic citadel at Jaffa Gate, now a museum and cultural venue telling Jerusalem’s story

Overview

The Tower of David, also known as the Jerusalem Citadel, stands just inside Jaffa Gate as one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Despite its name, the tower has no connection to King David — the fortress was originally built during the Hasmonean and Herodian periods, and later expanded by the Crusaders, Mamluks, and Ottomans. Its massive stone walls and towers have guarded the city for centuries, serving as both a military stronghold and a symbol of Jerusalem’s layered history.

Today, the Tower of David is home to the Tower of David Museum, which uses multimedia exhibits and archaeological remains to tell the story of Jerusalem across 3,000 years.

Spiritual & Cultural Significance

The Citadel has always been a strategic and symbolic site, positioned at the main western entrance to the Old City. For centuries, rulers rebuilt and fortified it, leaving behind layers of history that reflect the city’s diverse past. From Herod’s grand palace to Ottoman fortifications, each era left its mark.

In modern times, the Tower of David has been transformed into a cultural venue, hosting exhibitions, concerts, and the renowned Night Spectacular sound-and-light show. For visitors, it is a place where history comes alive — not only through ruins but also through living culture and storytelling.
