Overview
With its shimmering golden onion domes, the Church of Mary Magdalene is one of Jerusalem’s most distinctive landmarks. Built in 1888 by Tsar Alexander III of Russia, the church was dedicated to Mary Magdalene, the devoted follower of Jesus who witnessed His crucifixion and resurrection. Located on the Mount of Olives, the church is part of the Russian Orthodox tradition and serves as both a functioning convent and a pilgrimage site.
Its ornate interior, filled with icons, chandeliers, and frescoes, contrasts with the serenity of the surrounding olive groves. The church also houses the tombs of Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna and Princess Alice of Battenberg, mother of Prince Philip, making it a site of both spiritual and historical resonance.
