St. Mark’s Syriac Orthodox Church –
Tradition of the Last Supper

Syriac Orthodox church linked to early Christian worship and the Last Supper tradition

Overview

St. Mark’s Church, located in the Armenian Quarter of Jerusalem’s Old City, is one of the most ancient Christian churches in the city and the spiritual home of the Syriac Orthodox community. Tradition holds that the church is built on the site of the house of St. Mark the Evangelist’s mother, Mary, where the Last Supper may have taken place and where the disciples gathered after the Resurrection.

Although the Cenacle on Mount Zion is more commonly associated with the Last Supper, St. Mark’s continues to preserve this alternate tradition with great devotion. The present church dates to the 12th century, built over earlier Byzantine structures, and retains a deeply spiritual, intimate atmosphere.

Spiritual & Cultural Significance

For the Syriac Orthodox faithful, St. Mark’s Church is not only a parish but also a link to their ancient roots in the Holy City. Its small, stone interior preserves icons, manuscripts, and inscriptions in Syriac, Greek, and Arabic, reflecting the community’s enduring presence despite centuries of political upheaval.

Pilgrims who visit experience a living tradition of one of Christianity’s oldest churches, still active in daily worship. The church also treasures a revered icon of the Virgin Mary, believed to have been painted by St. Luke.
