Church of the Flagellation – First Station of the Cross

Russian Orthodox pilgrimage center near the Holy Sepulchre with historic ruins

Overview

The Church of the Flagellation, located along the Via Dolorosa in the Muslim Quarter of Jerusalem’s Old City, marks the traditional site where Jesus was scourged by Roman soldiers before His crucifixion.

The current church was built in the 1920s by the Franciscan Order, replacing earlier Crusader and medieval structures on the same sacred ground. With its serene courtyard and peaceful interior, the site offers pilgrims a space of reflection at the beginning of the Stations of the Cross.

Spiritual & Cultural Significance

This church is considered the First Station of the Cross, making it a vital starting point for pilgrimages along the Via Dolorosa. Its architecture is rich in symbolism: the stained-glass windows depict Pontius Pilate washing his hands, the crowd choosing Barabbas, and the scourging of Jesus.

Above the altar, a mosaic of thorns evokes the crown placed upon Christ’s head. Beyond its artistic beauty, the church embodies the suffering and sacrifice that lie at the heart of the Christian narrative.
