Mount of Temptation & Monastery
Jericho’s Sacred Heights

The Mount of Temptation overlooks Jericho with its cliffside monastery, sacred tradition, and sweeping views of the Jordan Valley.

Overview

Rising above Jericho, the Mount of Temptation (Jabal al-Qarantal) is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. According to Christian tradition, this is the place where Jesus fasted for forty days and was tempted by the devil (Matthew 4:1–11). Perched dramatically on the mountainside, the Monastery of the Temptation was first built in the Byzantine period and later reconstructed by the Greek Orthodox Church.

The site combines breathtaking natural scenery with profound spiritual resonance. Visitors can ascend the mount via the Jericho cable car or hike the winding paths used for centuries by pilgrims and monks.

Spiritual & Cultural Significance

The Mount of Temptation is both a biblical symbol and a living place of worship. It connects the story of Christ’s temptation to the landscape of Jericho and remains an important pilgrimage site for Christians worldwide.

For local Palestinians, the mountain and monastery are part of Jericho’s heritage and cultural identity, blending spiritual devotion with the natural beauty of the Jordan Valley.
