Shepherds’ Field – Where Angels Announced the Good News

In Beit Sahour’s hills, Shepherds’ Field recalls the angels’ message of peace, with chapels, caves, and Byzantine ruins set in timeless pastoral landscapes.

Overview

On the hills of Beit Sahour, just east of Bethlehem, lies Shepherds’ Field — the site traditionally associated with the angels’ announcement of Christ’s birth to the shepherds. Two locations commemorate this biblical event: the Catholic Shepherds’ Field, maintained by the Franciscans, and the Greek Orthodox Shepherds’ Field. Both offer chapels, archaeological remains, and sweeping views of the pastoral landscape where the Christmas story unfolds.

The Catholic site features a modern chapel designed by Antonio Barluzzi in the 1950s, decorated with frescoes of the Nativity story. Nearby caves once used by shepherds are open to visitors, offering a direct link to the Gospel narrative. The Orthodox site preserves Byzantine-era ruins, including a 5th-century church and mosaic floors, highlighting the area’s deep Christian history.

Spiritual & Cultural Significance

Shepherds’ Field is one of the most moving biblical sites near Bethlehem. Spiritually, it recalls the Gospel message of hope first given to humble shepherds, making it a powerful place of reflection for pilgrims.

Culturally, the site connects the pastoral traditions of Beit Sahour with the biblical heritage of the region. Families in Beit Sahour have historically been herders and farmers, and this continuity adds depth to the experience. Pilgrims not only walk through ancient ruins and chapels but also sense the living bond between land, faith, and community.
