Church of the Condemnation – Second Station of the Cross

Franciscan church marking the Second Station of the Cross, where Jesus was condemned by Pilate

Overview

The Church of the Condemnation, located opposite the Church of the Flagellation on the Via Dolorosa, commemorates the moment when Pontius Pilate condemned Jesus to death.

The current structure was built in the late 19th century by the Franciscans on the remains of a medieval Crusader church. With its five white domes and quiet atmosphere, it provides pilgrims with a place of reflection at the beginning of the Passion journey.

Spiritual & Cultural Significance

As the Second Station of the Cross, this site recalls the trial before Pilate, a pivotal moment in the Passion narrative. The church’s architecture and artwork highlight themes of judgment and sacrifice.

Frescoes depict Pilate washing his hands and the crowd calling for Jesus’ crucifixion. Together with the neighboring Church of the Flagellation, it forms part of the Franciscan compound, marking the official start of the Via Dolorosa processions.
