Al-Hakawati – Palestinian National Theatre

Experience Palestinian theatre, music, and storytelling at Al-Hakawati, the National Theatre in Jerusalem’s cultural heart.

Overview

Al-Hakawati, officially the Palestinian National Theatre, is Jerusalem’s most important stage for Palestinian performing arts. Founded in 1984 in East Jerusalem, it transformed a former cinema into a vibrant cultural institution. Its name, “Hakawati,” recalls the Arab tradition of oral storytelling, which remains central to the theatre’s productions.

For over three decades, Al-Hakawati has presented plays, concerts, dance, and storytelling that reflect Palestinian history, heritage, and daily life.

Cultural and Community Role

As a cornerstone of Palestinian cultural life in Jerusalem, Al-Hakawati nurtures local talent and provides a stage for expression under difficult political conditions. It hosts youth workshops, develops community programs, and brings theatre into schools and refugee camps.

Despite financial and logistical challenges, the theatre endures as a symbol of resilience, safeguarding Palestinian creativity and storytelling traditions.
