Cenacle – The Room of the Last Supper

Traditional Upper Room on Mount Zion where the Last Supper and Pentecost are remembered

Overview

The Cenacle, located on Mount Zion, is traditionally revered as the site of the Last Supper, where Jesus shared His final meal with His disciples, instituted the Eucharist, and washed their feet in an act of humble service. The name “Cenacle” comes from the Latin cenaculum, meaning dining room.

The current Gothic-style chamber dates back to the 14th century, built by the Crusaders on top of earlier Byzantine and medieval structures. While the space itself has been modified through the centuries, it continues to carry immense symbolic and spiritual weight for pilgrims visiting Jerusalem.

Spiritual & Cultural Significance

For Christians, the Cenacle is more than a historical room — it is the birthplace of the Eucharist and the priesthood, as well as the place where Jesus gave His disciples the commandment to love one another. Tradition also associates the site with other significant events, such as the appearance of the risen Christ to His disciples and the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, which many believe took place here.

Today, the Cenacle serves as a powerful symbol of unity, prayer, and the beginnings of the Christian Church. Its location on Mount Zion, near Dormition Abbey and St. Peter in Gallicantu, links it with other sacred events tied to the final days of Jesus.
