Al Sawad Quarter is one of the oldest quarters in Tulkarm. During the Ottoman period, the quarter contained a court with a prison. After that, the buildings were used as grain milling centers, then as a small guesthouse. These buildings still play an important commercial role in Tulkarm. The majority of the buildings are owned by the Sawad Family. The quarter itself contains many ancient Ottoman houses, populated mainly by members of the Sawad Family.
