Ramallah Municipality built the Bashir Al Barghouthi Square in the Dar Ibrahim neighborhood opposite the First Ramallah Group (Sareyyet Ramallah). The Square features part of an old olive press that belongs to the Dahu family. It is also landscaped with trees and flowers, which reflect authenticity and belonging, two qualities characterized by Mr. Barghouti.

A formal inauguration ceremony of the Square was organized in the presence of the late Bashir Barghouti’s widow and relatives, together with several public and civil figures who loved him.

Bashir Barghouti (1931 - 2000) was born in Deir Ghassana village in the Ramallah governorate. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the American University in Cairo in 1956. Barghouti was a patriotic and progressive leader, and was one of the leaders of the re-establishment process of the Palestinian Communist Party (currently the Palestinian People’s Party) and was its secretary general from February 1982 until his passing on the 9 September 2000, after a long struggle with illness.
