The Franciscan Dominus Flevit Church, ‘The Lord Wept,’ is located on the descent from the Mt. of Olives towards Jerusalem. Built in 1955, the Church was designed by Italian builder Antonio Barluzzi. Its unique architectural form, with a tear shaped dome and an alter facing Jerusalem, commemorates the site where Jesus wept as he first drew near to the city (Luke 19:41). During the building of the Church, workers uncovered the remains of a Byzantine-style Chapel from the 7th century. Also uncovered near the Church was a large ancient cemetery which includes several tombs from the Second Temple period.
