Bethany (Tomb of Lazarus)
A short distance from Bethphage, is the Palestinian village of Al Azariyya, also known as Bethany. Bethany played a major role in the ministry of Jesus and is famous as the place where, tradition holds, Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead. Also known by early Christians by its Greek name Lazarion or ‘place of Lazarus.’ Several grand churches were erected over the tomb of Lazarus and over the home of Mary and Martha.
The Franciscan Church of Lazarus is another one of the many churches in the Holy Land designed by the famous Italian architect Antonio Barluzzi. It was built in 1952 and stands near the remains of its ancient counterparts. The Church features three ornate mosaics portraying Mary, Martha, and Lazarus on its façade.
