Tour Description

 Walking the Oasis of Faith and Beauty – Uncover the mosaic of coexistence.

Jericho City Center: Here the traffic moves around the modern symbols of an oasis: Fountain, Palm Tree and Tourist Information. Experience the vibrant city center of Jericho which is lined up with many shops and restaurants.

Hisham Palace: Built in the 8th century during the Umayyad period as a winter resort with view, the site offers an overwhelming beauty in mosaic. The first dynasty of Islam invited guests to a state of the art palace.

Ein el-Sultan: The main spring of the oasis, the source of human development. Excavations nearby revealed settlement layers starting almost 10.000 years ago. Thus Jericho is called “the Oldest City in the World”.

View to Mount Temptation: Considered the site where Christ was tempted after his baptism, during his 40-day fast. Today a Greek Orthodox Monastery clings to the cliff, some 200 meters above the ground, and around 50m below Sea level.

We pass Tell es-Samerat, where King Herod could host chariot races and performances for his royal guests.

Family visit: One of the oasis farming families opens the doors and we relax.

St. Andreas Coptic Church: Behind an oasis garden a church is build over a mosaic floor of a Byzantine church, reminding the encounter of Jesus with the tax collector at his home.

Jericho Mosaic Center: Light rooms built from mud brick, a spacy workshop for mosaic making and a garden with trees allow a relaxed ending of the walk.

Difficulty Level: Easy but extended walking, one steep section.

Meals: Optional light lunch towards the end of the tour (not included, but needs to be prearranged). Please decide by booking, if you want a traditional breakfast with bread, yoghurt, olive oil and za’atar in a Palestinian family home. Lunch is also possible.

Remark: Due to the construction of a protection roof at Hisham Palace, the mosaic floors might not be accessible in 2019. A film on site, pictures and the Jericho Mosaics Center try to compensate.

Getting to Jericho

Jerusalem to Jericho:

Option 1: Bus no 263: This bus departs from the Damascus Gate Bus Station in East Jerusalem (located on Sultan Suleiman Street). Inform the driver that you are continuing to Jericho and he will drop you off in Bethany City Center ( Al Izrariya) . From there, take a Jericho shared taxi (orange mini bus for 7 persons) to the Jericho City Center. The cost for each ride is around 12-15 ILS. Duration: Approx 60 minutes.

Option 2: Private Taxi: A private taxi from Jerusalem to Jericho will cost around 320 ILS ($85). Duration: Approx 30-45 minutes.

Bethlehem to Jericho:

Option 1 – Shared taxi from Central Bus Station: Take a shared taxi (servees) to Jericho from the Bethlehem Central Bus Station (located on Manger Square Street). Ticket costs around 25 ILS. The taxi will end at the Jericho City Center. Duration: Approx. 60-80 minutes.

Option 2 – Private Taxi – Via West Bank: A private taxi from Bethlehem to Jericho will cost around 200 ILS (Appx $55).

Option 3 – Private Taxi – via Jerusalem: A private taxi from Bethlehem to Jericho will cost around 370 ILS (Appx $100).

Ramallah to Jericho:

Option 1: Shared Taxi Take a shared taxi (servees) to Jericho from the Ramallah Central Bus Station (located on Al Nahda Street). The cost is around 20-25 ILS. The taxi ends at the Jericho City Center. Duration: Approx. 45-60 minutes.

Option 2: Bus 218 : Take bus no 218 from Al Nahda street to Jerusalem Damascus Gate Bus Station and then connect to Jericho (see Jerusalem to Jericho).

Option 2 – Private Taxi: A private taxi from Ramallah to Jericho will cost around 150 ILS ($40). Duration: Approx. 45 minutes.

Hebron to Jericho:

Option 1: Shared Taxi Take the shared taxi (servees) from the Hebron Central Bus Station (located on Wadi al Tufah Street), to Jericho City Center . The taxi goes directly to the border (Jericho to Jordan) and will stop in the resting Area. The cost to Jericho is 50 ILS. From the resting area, take a bus to the City Center. Duration: Approx. 60-80 minutes.

Option 2 – Private Taxi: A private taxi from Hebron to Jericho will cost around 260 ILS ($70).

Nablus to Jericho:

Option 1 Shared Taxi to Ramallah and connect to Bethlehem: Take a shared taxi (servees) from the Nablus Central Bus Station (located on Rafidiya Street) to the Ramallah Central bus Station (located on Al Nahda Street). Cost of ticket around 20 ILS. The taxi will drop you off in the main bus station and from there take Jericho bus or shared taxi. Cost of ticket from Ramallah to Jericho costs around 18 ILS. Duration: Approx. 90-120 Minutes.

Option 2 – Private Taxi to Jericho: A private taxi from Nablus to Jericho will cost around 220 ILS (appx. $60).

Jenin to Jericho:

Option 1 Shared Taxi to Ramallah and connect to Bethlehem: Take a shared taxi (servees) from the Jenin Central Bus Station (located on Jama’a Street of Cinema street) to the Ramallah Central Station (located on Al Nahda Street). Cost of ticket around 35 ILS. From Ramallah, there take a shared taxi to Jericho. Cost of ticket from Ramallah to Jericho costs around 18 ILS. Duration: Approx. 2 – 2:30 hours.

Option 2 – Private Taxi to Jericho: A private taxi from Jenin to Jericho will cost around 280 ILS ($75). Duration: Approx. 2 hours.

Leaving from Jericho

Jericho to Jerusalem:

Option 1-Shared taxi to connect with bus no.263: Take a shared taxi (servees) from Jericho City Center to Bethany. Inform the driver that you need to connect with bus number 263 to Jerusalem. The cost for each ride is around 12-15 ILS. The drive to Bethany takes around 30-40 minutes and from there to Jerusalem around 15-20 minutes. Bus number 263 stops at Damascus Gate station in Jerusalem (located on Sultan Suleiman Street). Duration approx. 1 hour.

Option 2-via Bethlehem: Take a shared taxi (servees) from Jericho City Center to Bethlehem Central Station (located on Manger Square Street). From there connect to Jerusalem. Duration: approx 1 hours.

Option 3 – Private Taxi: A private taxi from Jericho to Jerusalem will cost around 370 ILS (approx $100). Duration: approx 30 minutes.

Jericho to Bethlehem:

option 1 – Shared taxi: Take a shared taxi (servees) from Jericho City Center to Bethlehem central Bus Station (located on Manger Street). Ticket costs around 20-25 ILS. Duration: Approx 1 hours.

Option 2 – Private Taxi – Via West Bank: A private taxi from Jericho to Bethlehem will cost around 150 ILS (Approx $40).

The taxi will drop you off in the main bus station and from there take Jenin shared taxi. Cost of ticket from Ramallah to Jenin costs around 35 ILS.
