The Haidar Abdel Shafi Square is situated near the Jerusalem Water Undertaking Headquarters in the city of Ramallah. It was inaugurated in 2014. In the design, simplicity and originality were taken into consideration, and were expressed with an olive tree at the center of the Square, which is spread out among small areas of earth and gravel.
Haidar Mohyiddin Abdel Shafi (10 June 1919 - 24 September 2007) was originally a Palestinian physician, yet he is one of the most prominent leaders of the Palestinian people. He headed the Palestinian negotiating delegation at the Madrid Peace Conference, before he arrived at the conclusion that Israel does not want peace. In 1972, he founded and administered the Palestinian Red Crescent Society in the Gaza Strip, and made it the setting for providing medical aid and hosting social and cultural activities. In 1996, he was elected a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council and was selected to head the Council’s Political Committee.
