Greek Orthodox Shepherds Field – Beit Sahour
The Greek Orthodox Shepherds Field , also known in Arabic as Kanisat Al Ra'wat, is located in Beit Sahour, 2 km southeast of Bethlehem. The ruins at the site feature a grotto that has been used as a church since the 4th century. Above it can be found remains of a Byzantine chapel, which was destroyed in 614AD. The chapel and a monastery were rebuilt in the 7th century and survived until the 10th century. In 1989, a new large church was built on the site. The 4th century lower Church has been restored, and the remains of the upper Church and Monastery have been preserved. There is also an archaeological site that is known as the “Tower of Edar,” which was built by Jacob after the death of his wife Rachel. (Genesis 35:21)
